Good News from Ava Cherry!
The collaborator of Bowie and Vandross joins me to discuss her new single!
Good News from Ava Cherry!
I recently spoke with Ava Cherry, who has been in the spotlight of late as part of reflections on the 50th anniversary of Young Americans, an album on which she collaborated with David Bowie. She is also featured in the documentary Luther: Never Too Much about fellow Young Americans alumn Luther Vandross, with whom she also worked closely. Ava’s ties to Bowie are well-known, both personally and professionally. She joined me on this occasion to deliver some news– some good news!
In our conversation, Ava was radiant, exuding warmth and positivity—qualities that resonate in her new single, “Love Is Good News.” Written by Curtis Mayfield, the song has been given new life by Ava, who produced it herself. “It’s not just about physical love for someone,” she tells me. “It’s about love for humanity, love for each other. We can no longer be selfish.”
Ava first recorded “Love Is Good News” years ago but decided to revisit the song because its message feels particularly urgent today. As she put it, “People are wanting to hear soulful songs now… something that touches their heart.” She’s passionate about creating music that inspires hope and unity at a time when, as she says, “We really need songs that touch that.” To my ears, this is the version that sounds like it should sound. Ava’s voice has developed a timeless quality and she seems very at ease with the song. She’s at ease, and despite the urgency of the message, the song itself is in no hurry.

The cover art for “Love Is Good News” was created by Mark Wardel, a longtime Bowie portraitist and accomplished artist. Ava speaks warmly of their friendship and his artistry. “He’s just brilliant at what he does, and he’s my good friend,” she says. “I love it so much.”
Her new single is now available on all major streaming platforms. For those interested in her new work, or who remember her collaborations with Bowie and Vandross, this release feels like a welcome return from an artist whose voice remains as vital as ever.
